Arsène Wenger won’t be best pleased.

Star midfielder Mesut Özil missed Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United last Saturday with a knee injury but has still joined up with the German national team for UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers taking place over the course of the next week.

“Mesut has a slight irritation of the patellar tendon. We’re confident he should be ready for the game,” Germany assistant coach Thomas Schneider said at a press conference on Tuesday.

If Özil wasn’t fit enough to play for Arsenal last weekend, should Germany really be risking him?

The issue that Arsenal have is that this game means something. Germany face Poland on Friday evening, having already lost to them once in qualifying already. With four games remaining the Germans are a point behind Poland in their group and just two points clear of Scotland, who they are yet to face away from home, with the third place team set to face a play-off round.

The current world champions will be incredibly eager to qualify automatically at the very least, so there is a decent chance Özil will be risked on Friday evening.

With the season just starting Arsenal and Wenger will want extra special care taken of the midfield, but there’s little the club can do. Last season he missed three months with a knee injury, we just have to hope that – if he plays – he comes through the game unscathed.
