Manchester United have spent a huge initial £36m on Anthony Martial, but could he prove to be worth it?

The deal for the 19-year-old will almost certainly rise to £51m over the course of the next couple of seasons and could even reach £58.5m but, should Martial develop into a player anywhere near as good as another certain Frenchman, they’ll be getting their money’s worth.

Martial has just won his first two caps for France over the course of the international break, and new national team-mate Yohan Cabaye has said the teenager reminds him of a certain someone.

“He is like Thierry Henry,” the midfielder, who returned to the Premier League this summer, has said. “Trust me.

“He has the same qualities as Thierry. Now, give him the time to prove it you on the pitch.”

Not only has Cabaye had the chance to train with Martial over the course of the last week, but he has also played against him.

Last season, when Cabaye was still with Paris Saint-Germain, both players came off the bench in the 1-1 draw between PSG and AS Monaco. Two minutes into added time Martial pounced on a loose ball in the box to grab a late equaliser and rob PSG and Cabaye of all three points.

It was one of only 15 goals the teenager has so far in his career and it goes without saying that Manchester United have rolled the dice by signing him. However, if he ends up being half as successful as Henry was in this country…

You know what, I don’t want to think about it.
