According to reports, Arsenal have sent our ‘people’ over to a recent u21 match between Italy and Slovenia in order to keep our beady eyes on defender, Daniele Rugani.

The 21-year-old is reportedly worth around €18m in total but is yet to feature for the Juventus senior team. The defender has, however, played 23 times for their B team.

Could we be scouting a young, promising Italian? Sure. But I don’t see us spending that amount of money on one, not if it’s only to bring him over to our reserves. €18m (€15m + €3m in add-ons) is just over £13m, which is only a couple of million less than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when we bought him from Southampton.

However, with the Ox, you have to take into consideration that he was a) exactly the type of player Wenger always goes for and would jump at the chance to sign, and b) he’s English. We signed Gabriel for just over £11m and he’s an established centre-back.

You could argue that we spent £16m on Calum Chambers, who is only 21, but again, he was Premier League proven, English and we’d just sold Bacary Sagna. Although we’d also signed Mathieu Debuchy, we needed backup. In addition, Chambers has always been open about the fact he can play at centre-back too, so he’s versatile.

I honestly don’t see us spending so much on a lad who is so inexperienced.
