Arsenal are planning to continue aiding refugees as Europe plunges into crisis.

As the most popular sport in Europe, and a remarkably lucrative one at that, you would expect football to be bound by some sort of moral duty to give back to a wider society. Real Madrid have offered €1m of support to refugees in Spain, while Bayern Munich have donated a similar amount.

According to the Guardian, Arsenal are planning to continue aid which has been provided by the club for four years, as fellow Premier League clubs Everton and West Bromwich Albion strive to provide further support.

Back in 2011 Arsenal named Save the Children as the club’s worldwide charity partner and have aided the refugee cause ever since. The club are now developing a programme to provide support to children in refugee camps in Iraq, sending a 100-box shipment of Arsenal kits on Tuesday.

The yearly Arsenal Foundation ball helps raise money for the charity, with players bidding in auctions to raise huge amounts. Over the past three years a total of £384,000 has been raised and put towards building football pitches at the camps in Iraq and Jordan.

As a huge football club, widely visible to the public it is fantastic of Arsenal to help. More Premier League clubs are likely to get involved, along with teams from Germany in particular, as the issues in Europe worsen. Football has the power to unite people, and should be used to do so more often.
