Tony Adams has admitted that although he doesn’t want to delve into the topic of Arsene Wenger’s managerial skills, he has neglected the defensive side of our game.

The Arsenal legend is known as one of the best defenders to ever play for us. The centre-back was a player who was feared by opponents and, as a true lover of the badge, never gave anything but his best.

However, when Adams played, it was a different time. Since he left in 2002, Wenger has perfected his attacking system and gone on to reinforce it over the years. Modern Arsenal now have a style all of their own.

The ex-Gunner admitted how he feels about Arsenal only winning one title since he left.

“I’ve felt quite upset about this,” Adams said.

“I’m not going to go into too much detail because they have a fantastic coach and they’re a fantastic club in a magnificent stadium.

“I think Arsenal have struggled to get the balance right in recent years and this is as far as I will go.”

Adams continued, “I’m saying he [Wenger] has got a great offensive unit, but I think he is neglecting the defensive side and I think that’s where the problem lies.

“If they strengthen that area I think they could go and win the league, but I think that’s the error of the team.

“He sticks to his principles and he wants his team to be offensive. I think he’s not got the balance right in recent years.”

For someone like Adams, who was an out-and-out defender, it’s difficult to see such glaring errors being made at the back while our attack is being developed further.

As frustrating as it is for Ian Wright to watch Olivier Giroud missing sitters, Adams must feel a similar way about Calum Chambers getting dragged out of position.
