David Ospina was a huge part of our campaign last season after taking the number one spot between the sticks from Wojciech Szczesny and Arsene Wenger believes he’s learnt from it.

Now that we’ve bought Petr Cech, Woj has gone out on loan to Roma, while Ospina sits firmly on the bench. Although it doesn’t look at if the Colombian will be pushing Cech out of the first team any time soon, Wenger reckons he’s willing to fight for the position.

On the goalkeeper’s first season for Arsenal, Wenger said, “He’s responded very well. David Ospina is a very strong man and a fantastic goalkeeper.”

Ospina made 23 appearances for us last season, with the vast majority being in the second half of the season after Woj was dropped to the bench.

Now, Ospina takes up the second goalkeeper’s role and it’s difficult to see that changing. However, Wenger is convinced he’ll definitely try, as this is a personal goal for him.

“He’s ready for the fight and will give Petr Cech a hard time. There will be enough room for him to play games as well, maybe sometimes to come in during the season.

“Why shouldn’t he be able to win his No 1 shirt back? That’s the target for him and I’m convinced he will fight for that.”

Cech as quickly found his form at Arsenal, pulling off two world class saves in our recent match against Liverpool at the Emirates. Does Ospina have the potential to top that?
