Palermo have been chasing the signature of Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell but, for now, he remains an Arsenal player.

According to the Italian club Arsenal’s asking price was simply too high for them to reach so, for now, he will stay in London.

Campbell managed 10 Arsenal appearances last season, playing an average of just over 30 minutes in those games, and failed to make an impression. The second half of the season saw him spend much more time on the pitch during a loan spell with La Liga club Villarreal but even then he scored just one goal in 22 games.

Nonetheless, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said he is happy for the player to stay at the club.

“At the moment he is here and personally I would like to keep him,” Wenger said in Friday’s press conference.

“I will have to sit down with Joel because I rate him highly as a player and personally if he stays here I am very happy.”

Campbell initially signed for Arsenal in 2011 but couldn’t come to England as he wasn’t eligible for a work permit. His most impressive loan spell came at Olympiakos in 2013/14 and was followed by good World Cup performances, earning him his Arsenal chance.

However, that chance wasn’t taken and with a lot of talented forwards at Wenger’s disposal it’s hard to see any way into the team for Campbell. Right now it would be a surprise if he wasn’t sold, or at least loaned out, this summer.
