Before Arsenal’s Community Shield win on Sunday Manchester United legend Roy Keane laid into the Arsenal squad.

The former Manchester United captain said Arsenal wouldn’t win the Premier League in the Sunday papers, instead appearing to question the character of certain members of the squad.

“Arsenal have some really good players – some good characters who roll their sleeves up,” Keane said. “But they also have one or two players who are more interested in selfies and six-packs, guys who are trying to get their pictures taken every day of the week.”

Take cover, Mr. Keane and don’t look at your phone. There are plenty more selfies due after our latest success and Aaron Ramsey has hit back.

“I think we’re more then capable of [winning the league] and I hope we can prove him wrong this season,” said the Welsh midfielder after yet another success at Wembley. Ramsey is back in the middle of the park and played well, particularly in the second half.

“We’ve had a very good pre-season, hopefully now we can go from strength to strength in the league.

“If we keep everybody fit we’ll have a great opportunity this season and I’m sure we’ll be there or thereabouts at the end,” Ramsey said. “We know what we’re capable of doing. Hopefully we can continue our form through the whole season.”

Injuries have been a bit of an issue in recent seasons, and Ramsey himself struggled for form at times last season as he dealt with muscle setbacks. The club has added more expertise with fitness and conditioning staff, which should help solve the issues that have been had in the past.

Goalkeeper Petr Čech played in his first official game for Arsenal, and Ramsey is happy to be playing alongside him.

“Petr Cech has proven so many times over the years what he’s all about and today he’s pulled off another couple of great saves so we’re glad to have him.”

An encouraging win against Chelsea off the back of a strong pre-season. Keeping players fit is vital and the signing of Čech really could be a huge one. Ramsey has every right to be in a bullish mood.
