Mesut Özil knows what it’s like to have huge and unfair scrutiny from the British press.

As a result, the German has reached out to international team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger and insisted that the midfielder needs more time to settle at Manchester United before showing what he’s capable of.

“The drastic interim judgement in [the] English press is not fair towards him,” Özil said, and he should know.

Since arriving at the Emirates Stadium in 2013 Özil has been picked on every time the entire team has disappointed. Even more frustratingly, his best performances don’t receive the acclaim they deserve.

Schweinsteiger has had a slow start to his Manchester United career, starting just once so far as he looks to build his fitness, and Özil is hoping he doesn’t get such a rough ride.

“He certainly needs some time to adjust to Premier League,” said the Arsenal star. “Just allow him a bit of time.”

Özil will have a chance to catch up with his Germany team-mate during the international break at the beginning of September, before their first meeting as Premier League rivals comes at the Emirates Stadium on 4th October.

By then it would help if Schweinsteiger hadn’t quite yet had the bit of time that he needs.
