Highly-rated Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez prevented parent club teammate Chuba Akpom from scoring on his third consecutive Hull City appearance to earn a point for Wolves.

Martinez completed his move to Wolves during last week, and is well regarded in the Championship after an impressive loan spell at Rotherham United towards the end of last season.

Akpom, playing alongside fellow Arsenal man Isaac Hayden, has impressed for Hull. The English forward scored in the Championship and League Cup last week as the season got underway.

Thanks to Martinez, who denied Akpom twice late on, Wolves came away from the game with a point to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

The Argentine goalkeeper played in place of Carl Ikeme, who started last weekend, in a  decision that Wolves boss Kenny Jackett insisted was purely based on football.

“It was a big call but a football decision,” Jackett said after the game. “I’m very confident in both goalkeepers.”

“Emi Martinez is a top class goalkeeper who is going to go on to have a very good career.

“Carl Ikeme hasn’t done a lot wrong but it is a football decision.

“It is such a vital position because if you want to be successful it is tough to do it without a good goalkeeper.”

It’s great news for Arsenal that Jackett rates the goalkeeper so highly, as he should receive valuable experience. Martinez has made eight first-team appearances for Arsenal and, with Petr Čech already 33, the 22 year-old has a massive chance to establish himself and prove he has what it takes to become Arsenal number one.
