After scoring an absolute worldie against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, Olivier Giroud explained the goal and his technique… on the pitch.

The early goal, assisted by Mesut Ozil who played out of his skin, wasn’t quite a scissor kick but it also wasn’t necessarily a volley either. Whatever it was, it was a beaut and a crucial goal in the game considering the Eagles went on to equalise soon after.

Speaking about the goal, the striker said, “It was maybe a volley or a scissor on the side, maybe I was a bit lucky but that’s what I wanted to do so yes I’m pleased with that.”

He added, “I told my friend Debuchy that I would celebrate with him if I scored so it’s a wink to him.”

It tickles me how he refers to Mathieu Debuchy as ‘my friend‘… as if we don’t know who he is.

“I like to reach back, I mean to wait for the cross a bit, to stand back,” Giroud continued. “I like to step back to give as much time to score the goal. It was a good cross from Mesut.

“I think it was the best chance to [for that kind of finish] and I was a bit lucky, but it was what I wanted to do so it’s nice for me and nice for the team.”

The goal marks the 28-year-old’s first of the new Premier League campaign and, after finding the net 19 times last season, he’ll be looking to stay in fine form. The season before that, he scored 22. Therefore, we know he’s capable of more if he can just stay fit.

Giroud is one of the most underrated players not just at Arsenal but in the league. Despite having a decent goal return, if he so much stutters in form, we ‘need‘ a new striker. Hopefully this season he’ll prove the doubters wrong.
