Petr Čech’s first Premier League game for Arsenal couldn’t have gone much worse, but the goalkeeper set about making amends with his performance against Liverpool on Monday night.

The fixture, which saw plenty of action despite the result, was Čech’s first home game since the match against West Ham and he finally showed the Arsenal faithful what he is capable of. After the game the goalkeeper spoke to Sky Sports and said he was happy with what he did against Brendan Rodgers’ men.

“The first game was the opposite of this one,” the goalkeeper said immediately after the final whistle. “When you start with a new club and everything goes wrong, you need to go back to work and bounce back that was what I tried to do.”

Čech made two superb saves late in the first-half to keep Arsenal on level terms, tipping a rasping Philippe Coutinho effort onto the post after he had produced a stunning reflex save to deny Christian Benteke a goal.

As humble as he is excellent, Čech wasn’t looking to take too much credit for the saves.

“Today was one of those game when I was in the right place and the right time.

“The first one I saw the ball all the way,” said the Czech stopper. “With Benteke, Gabriel tried to intercept, so you have to wait and once it got past him I had to get there fast. I had a bit of luck but I got there.”

I think you can take a bit more credit than that, Petr.
