Not only is Mesut Özil one of Arsenal’s very best players, but he also gave one of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt last weekend.

The German assisted the opener and completed 54 of 55 passes in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat of Crystal Palace, yet Turkish club Besiktas are no claiming they have spoken to his representatives about a possible transfer.

Board member Erol Kaynar is in charge of ‘foreign relations’ at the Turkish club, and has said that the club spoke to Özil’s representative this week, though any deal remains unlikely.

“They [Besiktas officials] met with representatives of Mesut Özil last week,” Kaynar said.

“I think they spoke about a potential transfer, although it is unlikely to happen soon due to the form and current standing of the player.”

Unlikely to happen soon. That’s one hell of an understatement.

Not only do Arsenal not want to sell the player, but they wouldn’t do so for a loss on the £42.5M spent on him two years ago. He’s integral and it would have to take a huge bid – one only a few clubs in the world could make – for Arsenal to even consider selling him.

If, somehow, Özil became available there are only a handful of clubs big enough to attract him. Besiktas, with all due respect, are not one of them.

The German midfielder recently expressed his desire to eventually don the shirt of Turkish Super Lig rivals Fenerbahce, who he supports. The midfielder has Turkish roots and it’s pretty clear which Turkish club he favours.

I’m sure plenty of clubs want the player. Dream on.
