Arsenal Ladies have confirmed that four first-team players have signed new deals to extend their stay at the club.

While everyone focuses on Arsène Wenger’s summer dealings, the women’s side have struck important deals.

The announcement is reminiscent of the men’s team confirming contract extensions for Carl Jenkinson, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a few seasons ago, with four homegrown players signing new deals and even striking a similar pose for the official announcement.

Arsenal captain and England star Alex Scott’s previous contract was due to expire in December, but she is now set to remain with the Gunners for the foreseeable future.

Goalkeeper Emma Byrne is a Republic of Ireland international and has won 11 league titles, nine FA Cups in her 15 years at the club.

At just 22, Emma Mitchell could be an important player for a long time while former England captain Casey Stoney will be extending her time at London Colney having also played for Charlton Athletic, Chelsea and Lincoln since first leaving Arsenal in 2002.

“Emma Byrne, Emma Mitchell, Alex and Casey are all key players for our team and we are delighted they have decided to commit their futures to the club,” manager Pedro Losa said to Arsenal.com after the news was confirmed.

“They bring fantastic experience and a winning mentality to the squad and it is important for us to keep players of their quality.”
