Arsene Wenger has hinted that Petr Cech could grab the number one spot ahead of David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny.

The goalkeeper, who has now started training with us, was always presumed to be able to walk into the position, considering his experience and price tag. However, it’s still unknown whether he will or not. Not that many people believed he would be sitting on the bench behind Ospina, but Wenger has now dropped his biggest hint that the former Blue will instantly become top goalkeeper at the club.

Wenger said recently, “He has many guarantees at the start.”

He continued, “He will give us talent and experience and knowledge of the top-level game. He can contribute in the game to stabilise our defensive sector.”

He added, “As well, all the other keepers are still young on the experience front and he can contribute to develop our young keepers. They are top quality and his positive experience will help.”

There are more ‘will’s than ‘if‘s at the moment regarding the goalkeeper, suggesting that he’ll be stepping straight between the sticks when he’s fit enough, which in theory, should be a shorter period of time than an outfield player would take.

As we’ve been saying for a while, a chance to learn from one of the best goalkeepers in the world will be a fantastic opportunity for our young goalies. Szczesny at least seems very open to the idea and has made it clear he wants to stay at the club. However, Ospina’s future is a tad more uncertain.

On the possibility of us signing more players in the window, the boss said simply, “It depends. We are still open to do something else.”
