For some reason there are still people who don’t think Mesut Özil’s move to Arsenal has been a success.

Arsenal hadn’t won a trophy for 9 years and had a reputation as a selling club which couldn’t attract the top players. Germany playmaker and Cristiano Ronaldo’s favourite teammate Mesut Özil signed from Real Madrid and Arsenal have since now two trophies in two seasons, with Alexis Sánchez also joining between the successes.

Enough said?

Speaking to Arsenal player Özil himself has said that he has more to give and his only aim is to help the team as much as possible this season.

“I know that I have a lot more potential to show but if you look at the last two years, we’ve been successful and have won the FA Cup twice,” Özil said while speaking to Arsenal Player in Singapore.

In the meantime he has also become a world champion, playing each game as Germany went on to lift the World Cup 12 months ago. Now, heading into his third season, he aims to help the Arsenal team as much as possible so even more success can be celebrated by the end of the season.

“Every season you need to prove yourself again and I want to do that again this time.

“I want to help the team as much as I can. Ultimately we have a strong team that can win everything. Our aim is to be more successful this season than we were in the last.”

Özil joined on deadline day in 2013 before his return to the club was delayed by the World Cup in 2014. As a result this is his first pre-season at Arsenal, which will only help. He won’t be struggling with the language, with finding a place to live, with getting to know his teammates or with fitness when the season kicks off.

“I’ve noticed myself that the training sessions we’ve had here are helping me to become fitter,” said Özil. The German midfielder scored in Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat of Everton as the Gunners won the Barclays Asia Trophy last weekend. Now his attention will turn to the Emirates Cup as we approach the new season.

“I want to get through pre-season without any injury and then we can see.

“I know exactly how I can use my body. We had three weeks holiday – maybe that was a bit too short – but I’m looking forward to the new season and to our new challenge.”
