England goalkeeping legend, Peter Shilton, has had his say on Petr Cech’s recent move to Arsenal and has hinted that the former Chelsea man’s age may start to work against him.

Shilton, who featured in 129 matches for the national team, was quick to point out the 33-year-old’s age to Talk Sport recently, remarking, “He is not getting any younger.”

Alright, Shilton. Take it easy!

He went on to compliment Cech but highlight where he believes the Czech international’s weak point lies, saying, “I have always rated him, he is a top quality good goalkeeper, but I’ve just thought on a few occasions that when Chelsea struggled, he struggled a bit sometimes.”

The former West Ham United keeper remains unconvinced that Cech will reach his full potential at Arsenal.

“He was playing behind a really good defence at Chelsea and that gives you confidence week in, week out but if he doesn’t get that cover we will see if he has that top quality and that confidence to perform.”

Although I do see what Shilton is saying – of course any goalkeeper needs a good defense in front of him in order to truly be successful – I’m not entirely sure that he watched many of our matches last season.

Last season, we only had four more goals scored against us compared to Chelsea. Our defense has gained this frankly unfair reputation as being leaky – and this was true for a long time – but last season especially, we were looking organised and solid.

I’m sure Cech won’t have any trouble.
