Arsenal Ladies’ Siobhan Chamberlain has made a deadline day move to Notts County Ladies who need cover as their first-choice goalkeeper has returned injured from the FIFA 2015 WWC.

Siobhan Chamberlain signed at the end of the 2013 season from Bristol Academy where she was ever present in all three FA WSL seasons.

However, she has not been afforded many opportunities in her two seasons at Arsenal as Emma Byrne has remained the first choice behind the posts. Having played fewer than ten games in two seasons, it was natural for Chamberlain to look for move, especially after coming on succesfully in the World Cup quarter -final against Canada and keeping a clean sheet.

You do wonder why the club would allow a top goalkeeper to reinforce a competitor in the league. When you look at the table Chelsea lead with 14 points, Arsenal Ladies are second with 11 points and Notts County only trail us by a single point.

Considering that Notts County were seriously weakened by Carly Telford’s injury – who has, in my view, been the best English goalkeeper over the last 18 months – it does not make sense to loan them a player as good as Siobhan Chamberlain.

Let’s hope this decision will not come back to haunt us come the end of the season.
