Arsenal’s Siobhan Chamberlain has revealed that she is ‘devastated’ after England were knocked out of the World Cup semi-final due to an injury time own goal.

The Lionesses were heading for extra time with the score level at 1-1 with Japan when fate struck and Laura Bassett scored a looping effort from the edge of her own box in stoppage time as she attempted to intercept a cross, sending them crashing out in the most cruel manner imaginable.

Speaking to the FA website after the match, Chamberlain said “We’re just devastated.

“At the end of the day, we just needed a bit of luck to come our way.

“But everyone can be proud of what we have achieved and hold their head up high to go home with no regrets.”

Chamberlain played very little at the tournament, making an appearance in the quarter final against the hosts Canada in what was a familiar pattern for all of the Arsenal players, most of whom seeing little game time.

England will now face Germany in the third-place play-off, otherwise known as the most depressing game in football, on Saturday.
