Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has claimed that Arsenal’s pending transfer of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech turns Arsène Wenger’s men into the most likely challengers for the Premier League title.

The former Tottenham boss isn’t alone, with the likes of John Terry also saying that Čech would add a great deal to this current Arsenal team.

Last season Wenger ended up switching goalkeepers but Čech would be a proven and established number one at the very highest level – arguably the first Arsenal have had since legend David Seaman left in the summer of 2003.

Massive

“It’s a great signing. I think it’s a massive signing,” said Redknapp.

“To have top quality goalkeeper is massive.”

A solid first choice that the defence can rely on – Čech should be that. The Chelsea legend has won 114 caps for the Czech Republic and won the Premier League Golden Glove on three occasions.

On a less personal level Čech has been a part of four Premier League winning teams, lifted four FA Cups, and won both the Champions League and Europa League during his 11 year stay at Stamford Bridge.

The 33 year-old even saved a penalty in extra-time as well as two in the shootout as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties to life the Champions League back in 2012. As a goalkeeper his age may not play a big part, he could still go on at the very top for a number of years.

Arsenal clearly feel that’s the case, reportedly paying £11M for the goalkeeper and giving him a three year contract.

In the short term, it is thought that this transfer takes Arsenal to the next level.

“I think Arsenal could now be the biggest challengers to Chelsea next season,” said Redknapp.

I would have to say I agree with him. The whole squad looks good, and has a decent mix of youthfulness and experience. Some players approaching their prime, some in their prime, and a handful still with a few years before they reach it.

It’s a good time to be an Arsenal fan.
