Arsenal legend David Seaman has voiced his support for current goalkeepers David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for Petr Cech but Seaman think Ospina and Szczesny are good enough to win us the Premier League.

Seaman played for Arsenal on 562 occasions over the course of 13 seasons at Highbury, winning a whole host of trophies.

As well as winning the league three times, Seaman was in goal as Arsenal lifted four FA Cups, one League Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

A glittering career also included 75 England caps – the goalkeeper is better placed than most to judge our current stoppers.

Good enough

Since Wojciech Szczesny was dropped Arsenal have enjoyed a great run of form in the league, with the Pole reinstated throughout the successful run in the FA Cup.

“Between the two of them there seems to be a good situation going,” said Seaman.

“They’re certainly good enough to be Arsenal keepers, and if you’re going to bring in someone new what do you do with Ospina?”

Petr Cech is the likely candidate if we do bring someone in, providing Chelsea would sell to us.

But Seaman doubts that would sit well with the Colombian.

“I don’t think he would be happy if they bought a new keeper. He’s not put a foot wrong since he was given the number one shirt and he should be given the chance to keep it.”

Seaman also admitted that Szczesny has made mistake, but believes the Pole will only learn.

“(Szczesny) has a confidence that is good for goalkeepers, you live by your mistakes and he’ll turn it round. Goalkeepers are judged by how they react to their mistakes.

“I’m sure he’ll work hard to get back in the first team.”

Competition

The Arsenal legend, who was Wenger’s number one when the Frenchman arrived at the club, says competition for the number one shirt will only be a good thing.

“Consistency helps but for the defenders in front of the keepers it’s not that big a deal,” said Seaman.

“It’s much more of a problem when the guy behind you isn’t playing well and is making mistakes.”

Whatever criticism is levelled at Szczesny and Ospina, neither committed too many errors that cost Arsenal last season.

Szczesny has shown in the past that he is more than capable of an entire season between the posts without a major faux pas.

“This competition is great because they’re so close in terms of ability.”

Seaman never really had such a competition during his time in goal for Arsenal.

John Lukic was replaced, Alex Manninger impressed when needed but couldn’t nail down a spot in the team.

There are plenty of opinions flying around on our goalkeeping situation.

Very few are as relevant as those of David Seaman.
