Carl Jenkinson played the full 90 minutes as England u21s defeated Sweden in their second group games of the European Championships.

After losing the opening game to Portugal it was crucial that Gareth Southgate’s side got something out of this game to maximise their chances of qualifying, and a late goal from Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard saw The Three Lions win 1-0.

Sweden had won their opening game against Italy, who England play in their final group game next week.

Arsenal right-back Jenkinson again played the entire game and looked one of England’s most promising players in the victory.

Drive

Jenkinson’s drive was evident throughout while England largely looked lacklustre and one-paced.

The defender created one of England’s best chances of the first half with a cross to the back post finding Harry Kane, who headed wide as he stretched for the ball.

A fairly subdued second half saw Jenkinson find Kane in the box against after 65 minutes but the striker could only control before passing back to the right-back who hit the side netting.

Despite having most of the ball Gareth Southgate’s side couldn’t force a breakthrough until Lingard controlled and volleyed a ball that Sweden goalkeeper Patrik Carlgren had attempted to punch clear following a corner.

Chance

The win gives England a good chance to qualify for the semi-finals, but they still need a result from the final group game against Italy on Wednesday evening.

Jenkinson, who looks likely to go out on loan again this season following a successful year at West Ham during the 2014/15 campaign, is sure to play again but fellow Arsenal player Calum Chambers looks certain to sit on the bench for the third game in a row.
