Arsene Wenger believes that Swansea’s manager, Garry Monk, has every reason to be considered for the manager of the Year award.

Preparing his team to host the Swans on Monday night, the Arsenal boss will be hoping to keep his side’s great run of form going as well as manage to rectify the 2-1 defeat in Wales earlier in the season.

Speaking to the press ahead of the game, Wenger was asked about Monk and, as is his way when it’s a manager other than Jose Mourinho, the boss was his usual complimentary self.

“It is not unfair for him to be manager of the year,” said Wenger, whose side host Swansea on Monday night. “How do you judge a manager?

“The Premier League is a Formula 1 race, where Formula 1 competes with Formula 2, with Formula 3, with Formula 4. It is like that in the modern game.

“The quality of the manager is always to take the best out of the team, of the potential of the team – that is the real job.

“How do you measure that? It is very subjective. Nobody knows. But to finish with over 50 points at Swansea is a remarkable achievement.”

Swansea go into the game at the Emirates in eighth place on 53 points, just four behind Southampton and five away from Tottenham with a game in hand on both (albeit the game in hand being against Arsenal).

At various points this season I think it’s safe to say that both Tottenham and Southampton, and their managers, have been lauded in a way that Monk has yet to experience despite the great job he’s clearly doing with the side.
