There’s been a lot of debate surrounding whether getting second place in the Premier League is actually better than third. Well, Arsene Wenger believes it is.

The race for second place is now officially on. Arsenal sit level with Manchester City with 70 points and a game in hand. If you’d have told the majority of Arsenal fans and even Wenger himself this mid-season, I doubt they would’ve believed you.

However, since second place began to look like genuine a possibility, people have started to question whether it actually matters that much. After all, both places secure Champion’s League football without having to face the extra fixtures in the play-offs but neither win any trophies for coming second or third.

When questioned about whether second is really better than third, the boss said, “Yes, for me, yes. We want to finish as high as you can. Our competitive attitude is to finish looking at ourselves thinking that we have given the maximum until the last day – that’s what it is about. It will be tight. Tonight we only [nearly] secured top four but let’s see if we can maintain the run and the quality.”

When quizzed about whether it’s a relief to not have to take part in the play-offs early next season, Wenger admitted, “It is better for the sleep in the summer.”
