Transfer season is almost upon us so it’s time to open up your warchest and get ready for some serious spending.

Or something.

With Arsenal splashing the cash on two marquee players in the last two summers, it’s not surprising that many of us are sitting wondering what delights this next window will bring us.

Will they be shiny? Speedy? Or an unknown attacking midfielder from a Ligue 2 club’s youth ranks?

Questions, questions, questions.

What we do know is that there will be *some* spending going on, but in what position and for what players, your guess is as good as mine.

“We are ready to spend the money for players who strengthen our team. There is a difference in that and just spending money,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“If I ask you who has spent the most money this last season and if I give you last season, and the season before, it is never the teams who have won the championship.

“If for example we got a player like Coquelin, if we had bought Coquelin for £40m in December, because he started to play in December, everybody would say, ‘What a buy! What a great player!’, but the fact that he comes out from our own club and plays, everybody says you still have to buy a player in his position.

“You have to be careful sometimes not to rate the players only by the amount of money they cost but just look at their performances.

“We are in a position where we just want a player with an exceptional quality in any area that can strengthen us.

“The depth of squad is important and any world class player in any position can help us achieve what we want to achieve.”

If you believe the press, Arsenal are in the market for at least a goalkeeper and a defensive midfielder but I don’t think that’s the case at all.

The way Wenger has talked about his keepers, calling them all ‘world class’ would lead me to believe he’s more than happy with what we’ve got.

That being said, the line about ‘any world class player in ANY position’ is intriguing, but should they decide to bring in a Petr Cech or Iker Casillas, someone is going to have to go.

With David Ospina only just arriving five minutes ago and Emiliano Martinez assured of his future at the club, that just leaves Woj. Are they really going to give up on the player who has been at the club for almost ten years? It would seem very unlikely.

As for the defensive midfielder, well, we have supposedly been ‘in the market’ for one of those for years now and still ended up with a player we already had getting a shot at the role when nobody else had legs that worked.
