Arsene Wenger admitted that he will have to rewatch the goal Arsenal conceded before making a firm judgement on his keeper but noted there were a number of mistakes in the lead up to the goal.

Asked if he was ready to criticise Wojciech Szczesny, Wenger replied “I will have to watch it again. I thought at first it wasn’t in, but it took some time for the referee to give it.

Unfortunately no, and slow motion shows what happened and it was definitely a goal.

“We will have to analyse it. The cross shouldn’t come in and then the shot, so it was a number of mistakes.

“They were ready to die on the pitch. We have to congratulate them.”

Even though here at Cannon Towers we are firm Arsene Wenger supporters, it could be argued that he himself made a number of errors in opting to start Mathieur Debuchy, who hadn’t played in three months, and Kieran Gibbs who hadn’t played in four weeks.

While it’s understandable that he would want to consider rotation, given the fact that the side don’t play again for eight days and were on a brilliant winning run, it was a strange decision to alter so many parts of the defence.

Perhaps he didn’t see Reading as that much of a threat in the attacking third.

Whatever the reason, it very nearly cost Arsenal the chance to defend their trophy at the end of May.
