Despite beating Chelsea 3-0 when on loan at Sunderland, Danny Welbeck feels the occasion was tainted by the embarrassing actions of teammate Boudewijn Zenden.

Talking ahead of the match against Chelsea at the Emirates this weekend, Welbeck took a trip down memory lane to one of his favourite memories of playing against the Blues.

The forward spent the 2010/11 season out on loan to Sunderland in order to get some playing time under his belt. During their tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Sunderland enjoyed an unlikely 3-0 victory over the London team.

“I remember we went there with nobody expecting us to pull off that result. We had a good team at Sunderland, everyone fought for each other and we ended up with a special win,” Welbeck reminisced.

“Nedum Onuoha scored a great first goal, dribbling around three or four players and then Asamoah Gyan made it two and I got a third at the end, intercepting a back pass towards Petr Cech.”

Although the win was excellent, the actions of midfielder ‘Bolo‘ Zenden left a black cloud over the day when he tried to join in with Asamoah Gyan’s celebratory dance.

Welbeck revealed, “Not many people forget Bolo Zenden’s dance either. He joined in with Gyan and it’s one of those things that he should never have done! I wouldn’t have even tried to join in with him but Bolo went for it.”

“I’m still in contact with him now but I try not to mention the dance – otherwise he might not text back!” He added begrudgingly.

Hopefully Welbeck can find it in himself to power through and get over the horrific ordeal he had to face during that match and, instead, focus on scoring, if he gets playing time.
