Arsenal have, apparently, been told not to bother trying to sign Petr Cech.

That makes a nice headline right? All very clickable. But it operates from the start point that the club were going to move for him in the first place.

Let’s pretend they were.

Chelsea will not sell him to a direct rival which isn’t really surprising given Jose Mourinho’s admission that he wouldn’t let Demba Ba join the Gunners on loan after they signed Mesut Ozil.

Cech, on the other hand, wants to stay in the Premier League which seems like something that’s not really going to be possible if Chelsea refuse to let him join one of the top clubs.

An Arsenal source told Goal.com “Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers around and he would be the perfect signing, but the message from Chelsea is not to bother wasting our time.”

But all of that ignores the fact that Arsenal are incredibly unlikely to buy a keeper this summer anyway.

Sure, Woj has fallen out of favour but it’s unlikely that Arsene Wenger will discard him when the window opens, that is unless something has happened that we don’t know about.

The Arsenal manager has placed a lot of faith and time in developing the Polish keeper and sacrificed Lukasz Fabianski, a keeper the manager was known to rate incredibly highly.

Add to that the arrival of David Ospina last season plus Emiliano Martinez, who admitted he thought about leaving but has clearly had some sort of guarantee, and you have to wonder where this new keeper is going to fit?

None of this is me saying that Cech wouldn’t be a valuable addition to any squad, even Arsenal’s, it’s just a realistic look at the situation and the nonsense around it.

None of this even takes into consideration the previous reports that Chelsea would allow Cech to pick whatever club he wished as a thankyou for his service.

Gossip, eh? How much fun!
