We all know that Arsenal can get out of their Champions League group, that’s never really the problem.

Whether they finish in first or second place, by virtue of being one of the top seeds, they know that their groups is, ultimately, always winnable or at the very least a place they can come second.

But things are set to get a whole lot tougher for the Gunners as UEFA revamp the seeding for the draws in a move that’s bound to annoy many Arsenal fans but is totally understandable.

The top seeds will now comprise the winners of the top seven leagues included in the competition as well as the overall winner from the previous season.

Putting aside their coefficient system which is how these things were previously settled, Arsenal, along with Manchester United look like they will drop into pot 2 while City, who have dropped out of the top 16 clubs in Europe due to their very poor showing in the Champions League, could go into pot 3.

Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino said about the decision “Football is about winning, it’s about competition, it’s about sporting merit. I think it’s kind of a natural thing to give to those who have won a competition a special treatment like this.”

They say it’s a ‘natural thing’ like they weren’t the ones to establish the original system in the first place.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how it all pans out but it makes sense, and it’s not often you can say that about a decision made by UEFA.

It is the ‘Champions‘ League, after all.
