It’s been more than 18 months since an Arsenal player was awarded the Barclay’s Player of the Month Award, something that was given to Harry Kane twice in 2015 alone.

So it’s not surprising that Olivier Giroud is feeling pretty special after receiving the award for March along with Arsene Wenger.

Scoring five goals in the four league games last month, Giroud piped the Tottenham man who could have become the first player to ever win three in a row.

How insane is that?

Speaking to Arsenal.com after the announcement was made, Giroud said “I’m really pleased with it.

“I would like to thank my team-mates and of course the fans, because it’s a collective sport and I couldn’t do it on my own.

“It’s a great honour to have been selected as Player of the Month, especially because we wanted to bounce back from the Champions League disappointment.

“That’s what we’ve done and we’ve come back really strongly. We all want to finish strongly and this award will give me more confidence for the following games.”

Arsenal players have won the award 28 times now, more than any other side except Manchester United who can boast 32 awards, while the Frenchman is the 19th different Arsenal player to pick up the honour.

Aiming to carry on his great scoring form, Giroud has his sights on a new target – outscoring Alexis Sanchez.

“Yeah, but it’s a ‘battle’ in a nice and good spirit,” he added. “I joke with Alexis about it in Spanish. We are in good form, all of us. I’ve scored 13 goals in the Premier League and so has Alexis, so we’ll have a good fight until the end.”
