Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admitted that he was surprised that Danny Welbeck started up top for Arsenal.

Telling reporters that the result was ‘a big blow‘, the Dutchman, who discarded Monday night’s match winner after claiming that Welbeck was not at the required standard for Manchester United, was his usual tetchy self in his press conference.

Van Gaal said

“It was also a surprise that Wenger put him in the lineup at that position, was also a surprise.

“I’m doing that also a lot of time against the club who a player was playing for because he shall be very motivated but I think we gave that goal away particularly.”

The United manager also defended his choice to opt for Radamel Falcao ahead of Welbeck.
