It’s safe to say that Gabriel has made a good impression since his arrival from Spain in January.

Now, the centreback is hoping to do the same with his national team after receiving his first callup ahead of Brazil’s friendly against Chile at the Emirates.

Speaking to the media in Brazil, Gabriel said

“There have always been a lot of options and they are players of the highest quality

“It’s going to be a good battle. I’m here to try to earn my place with humility.”

Gabriel also told Arsenal.com

“I am very happy with the news, and it is a dream for any player to wear the shirt of your country.

“I’ll play the best possible way. It is a valuable opportunity and I hope that is the first call of many.

“It will be an incentive for me to continue working hard at Arsenal. It will not be easy, because the Brazilian team has great quality, but I will work hard to get my place in the team.”

Making five appearances since signing, Gabriel has won over fans with his passion and his performance against Newcastle at the weekend included 17 clearances and eight interceptions, demonstrating his effectiveness.

With the manager saying that he brought him to the club to become a starter, it puts Per Mertesacker’s place in the side in jeopardy.

What the future holds for the club’s vice-captain is not clear but he certainly has a fight on his hands to keep his starting sport in the lineup.
