New deal for Akpom

Out of contract in the summer, Chuba Akpom has reportedly agreed to sign a new four-and-a-half year deal with Arsenal that will tie him to the club until 2020.

With offers already on the table from a number of clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Arsene Wenger will no doubt be delighted to have got him to commit his future to the club he has been at since he was six years old.

Match Postponed

Arsenal’s FA Youth cup game against Crewe was postponed due to a frozen pitch. A new date has not yet been released for the rescheduled fixture.

UEFA Youth Cup exit

The under-19’s were knocked out of the UEFA Youth Cup as they lost 1-0 at Atletico Madrid.

More information on that game can be found here.

Speaking about the defeat, Steve Gatting, the u19’s manager, told Arsenal.com

“We had quite a young team and some of the younger lads started a bit nervously.

“We gave them a bit of a leg up with a sloppy goal that was caused by lots of little mistakes.

“When we look back at it later on, we’ll think, ‘how did it happen?’, but it did.

“They then sat back and we weren’t quite good enough to equalise.

“It’s a big learning experience. We wanted to win, obviously it didn’t happen, but the boys are playing European football which is a little bit different to English football and they found out tonight how hard it can be.

Under-18’s Hammered

The u18’s lost five nil to West Ham in a game that took place at Arsenal’s training ground.

Conceding the first goal after just five minutes, the youngsters were three down by halftime.

Speaking after the match, the manager, Frans de Kat, said

“It’s disappointing to lose 5-0.

“We worked very hard but they scored two early goals and that made it a very difficult game for us.”

Loan watch

Joel Campbell

Joel was not included in Villarreal’s squad for their game against Barcelona which they lost 3-2 in the Nou Camp but the Costa Rican is happy to have signed for the Spanish side.

Yaya Sanogo

Yaya played 71 minutes for Crystal Palace against Everton as the Eagles lost 1-0. Not really making much of an impact, he did have one shot blocked by John Stones.

Matt Macey

Matt completed another 90 minutes for Accrington Stanley but conceded five as they lost 5-1 at home to Northampton.

Making use of deadline day, Accrington signed 27-year-old keeper Scott Davies on loan from Fleetwood and it’s not yet clear what this will mean for Macey, 20, whose initial loan spell was only for one month from 8th January but it would seem likely that he is set for another loan spell or to return to Arsenal.

If used, Davies, who will be with the club until the end of the season, will become the eight keeper Accrington Stanley will have played this season.

The young keeper also featured for the full 90 against Bury in midweek and kept a cleansheet as Accrington Stanley won the game 1-0.

Jack Jebb

Jebb is still recovering from a knee injury.

Carl Jenkinson

A calf strain kept Carl out of the West Ham side that lost 2-0 at Liverpool.

Given that the right-back was described as ‘touch and go‘ before the game by Hammers boss Sam Allardyce, it does not seem to be a problem that will keep Jenks sidelined for any length of time.

Austin Lipman

Austin played no part in Boreham Wood’s 5-0 hammering at the hands of Basingstoke Town.

Ryo Miyaichi

In what is becoming a bit of a theme for the Japanese youngster, Ryo was not included in FC Twente’s squad for their 2-1 win over Cambuur.

Since joining the Dutch side the 22-year-old has played a total of 362 minutes in the Eredivisie, featuring in eight matches, averaging 45 minutes per game.

He was last included in the squad on 21st December when he was an unused substitute and has not played for the first team in the league since November 1st when he was a 66th minute substitute.

Lukas Podolski

Lukas played 54 minutes for Inter Milan as they lost 3-1 at Sassuolo.

Of the six games Poldi has featured in for Inter, he has completed 90 minutes twice (once in Serie A (5 appearances) and once in the Coppa Italia). He has one assist so far.

Is it ok to ask at this point if the people who wondered why Wenger didn’t use him more are asking the same of Roberto Mancini as well?

Jon Toral

Jon came on for the final 14 minutes of Brentford’s 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal’s FA Cup opponents, Middlesbrough, replacing Toumani Diagouraga.

Losing the reverse fixture 4-0, the Bees pushed Boro close for the entire game with only Grant Leadbitter’s 44th minute penalty separating the sides.

Josh Vickers

Concorde Rangers did not play this weekend as their game away to Maidenhead United was postponed after an early pitch inspection.

Vickers did, however, feature for Rangers mid-week when he played the full 90 and also kept a cleansheet as they won 1-0 at Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday night.

Wellington Silva

Wellington played the full 90 minutes for Almeria as they defeated Getafe 1-0 at home giving the Brazilian and his teammates their first win in five games.
